Metal Gear Solid 3 came out in 2004.

The Boss is great you guys and a shining example of a female video game character done right, but instead of using her as one of the few examples of all of these requests for better representation to shut people down who are trying to create progress in the gaming community, let’s use her as an example of how you can have a strong, feminine, motherly, well-written and complex female character be successful in a video game for all of those designers, developers, and executives out there who claim that such characters drag down their game’s value.

  • The “romantic” nature of their relationship is also evident in the second stinger at the end of MGS4when Snake decides to live the rest of his (short) life in peace and Otacon doesn’t hesitate to go with him. In addition, in terms of the main Solid Snake storyline, not only is this the last conversation of the entire game and series (and also possibly the last canonical conversation between Snake and Otacon that the audience hears), Snake’s last word is Otacon’s name in response to Otacon promising to stick with Snake until the end.

This game is disgusting, and REWARDS YOU (I’m not kidding) for completing an objective with an audio tape that contains rape and child rape. And it is handled so poorly, it makes me sick.

If you want more information on what the game portrays read this or watch this. The video contains no…

IT’S NOT FUCKING REAL.

this is a huge leap in video game history, this is on of the very first games to dare discuss such things as rape, its not an easy task to go forward to do, what you are saying now is go back, do not discuss these things, its so “sick” to do so, so you are stopping our beloved medium from progressing and moving forward as into the topics covered many times by film, books, tv, comic books and music, are we not allowed to move forward as a medium, we should be encouraging kojima to be doing this. Especially since this is his intention to go into risky territory, putting himself out there to do so to help us grow, he knows what he is trying to do is hard, but he is attempting to do is difficult.

But i believe that your opinion however deserved lacks basis, you must be forgetting that ground zeroes is the prologue, making judgments off of it is like judging a book off the first two pages, its just as ridiculous to do it with this game. My final point being if any game series should be able to move into such hard hitting emotional, devastating and human topics as this, it is our beloved metal gear solid.

This really made me laugh, thank you.

I’m not saying games need to ignore these issues. I AM saying that Kojima handled these issues in a poor way. Please go back and read another response I posted for more detail on why I think this here. Furthermore, I fail to see what the audio tape lends to the story. It’s there because it’s there? Because it gives Snake motivation to kill super-evil-dude Skullface? Why? Why reward players with something like that? It’s fine that topics like rape are addressed in games, and I, believe it or not, encourage that. What I don’t encourage, is the childishness and insensitivity that Kojima approached this theme with.

Please read the article or watch the video that I linked to in the original post if you want to understand where other people are coming from with this opinion.

I couldn’t disagree with you more. In no way did I feel like they ‘fetishized’ rape. The portrayal of rape in media shouldn’t be condemned. It’s a real issue and should be talked about. Being dismissive of the matter doesn’t help anything either.

Rape isn’t cool, like not at all. Saying Kojima revels in the pain of child is a huge overstatement. Every graphic moment in Ground Zeroes is unapologetic and truly sickening. It had my stomach twisting in knots. (Which is what I believe to be the intended purpose of having these scenes in the game in the first place) Kojima wasn’t trying to demonize Paz in anyway. I don’t think any right-minded person would come to the conclusion that she’s a bad person in anyway.

Themes such as: rape, child soldiers, torture, etc. have been a part of the series from the beginning. Maybe it’s me, but I’ve always felt that Kojima handle these disgusting practices with the utmost respect.

But hey, it’s just my opinion. I’m not here to start any arguments, just offer another opinion. I can totally see where you come from, and the fact that the ESRB didn’t put some kind of warning on the box is a crime itself.

What they mean about fetishizing rape is that you get the tape with depictions of rape as a reward for completing the game. That is, indeed, fetishizing, and it’s ridiculous that it had to be in the game in the way it was. Kojima handling these with in the past doesn’t mean he’s not subject to being criticized now. And he should, because that was horribly implemented.

You say ‘reward’ like it’s an achievement or a trophy or something. I don’t see that as the case. No one in their right mind would think to themselves, “Yes! I just got the secret rape tape.” I may be speculating, but I think of it as a tool to build context to the situation Paz and Chico were in. Crude? Sure. Redundant? Maybe. It’s just my opinion on the matter, though. I’m sure my mind will change if more information surrounding the matter surfaces.

P.S. Thanks for replying in a polite manner. I’m always happy to take part discussions like these

I say it like that because it is like that. You beat the game and the first message that pops up is that you can now listen to all of Chico’s tapes, the rape tape being one of them. Just because it’s not in the form of a trophy doesn’t mean it wasn’t intended to be one. You beat the main mission and you get a rape tape for doing so. That’s what happens. You can mince the words as much as you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is, in all shapes and forms, a reward for completing the task at hand. It was ridiculous. Even if that wasn’t Kojima’s intention in the first place, which I’m REALLY hoping that wasn’t the case, it was a horribly fucked up case in which he should’ve been more sensitive about and payed attention to details like this. Regardless of intentions, though, it was a reward for completing the game.
