Life of Pi - Paradise

Life of Pi - Paradise

When I went to NY in July I wound up buying myself a White copy. I already had the Black one, but I wanted to play it again without deleting my save. Playing the game again made me notice things I didn’t before, like here.

When I played it for the first time, I didn’t know anything about the characters. I didn’t know Bianca or Cheren. Naturally, when this scene happened, since I didn’t care the least about her, I didn’t feel anything for it. If anything, I rolled my eyes at it while thinking “oh, another teen having problems with parents”. But as the game went on, I started to feel what Bianca was feeling. This is specially true with the scene in Nimbasa with her, her father and Elesa.

However playing it again, now that I know the characters fairly well, this scene almost got tears in my eyes. Bianca dreams to be a great Pokémon trainer and defies her father for it. In the end she doesn’t become one. After my first playthrough I kept thinking: Is Bianca okay with herself right now? Did she ever envy Cheren or the player for becoming what she couldn’t? That’s because she realized she would never become a great trainer so she took the second route, followed plan B: started researching Pokémon instead. But I couldn’t stop thinking about whether or not she was happy about it since it was a huge blow on her dream. Just think about it, how would you feel if you realized your dream would never be able to happen because you don’t have the necessary skills for it? It almost felt weird for it to be in a Nintendo game because I was expecting perfect magical Disney endings for everything and everyone - something the game didn’t do with one or another.

Back to Bianca, looking at her here again, before all her character development, I feel really sorry for her because I already know of what’s waiting ahead for her. But then I remember how happy she seemed to be with her choice at the end of the game and how happy she is to present the new trainers their first Pokémon in B&W 2 and I feel sort of proud of her. She didn’t let her “failure" put her down. Even when following plan B she still smiled and kept going and rooted for the player to become the champion and she is genuinely happy about it and I can’t love her more for it. It shows that you can still be happy even when things don’t go according to plan. It’s okay, it’s fine, you just have to give yourself a chance.

I can’t wait to see what B&W2 has in store for her. You go, Bianca!
