That’s definitely NOT okay. Unfortunately a lot of people do that, but it’s wrong since you’re still using someone else’s art without their consent.
It just makes it even worse when they credit to sites like safebooru and zerochan. I’ve reported quite a few a long time ago, but unfortunately Deviantart turns a blind eye to them. It’s a shame and make me feel horrible.

Look, I hate multi-fandom-tagged posts as much as anyone but enough is enough.
To all you dickweeds that keep uploading unsourced Pixiv art, do you know what this is?
This is what you see in your Pixiv bookmarks when the artist deletes the picture. My Pixiv bookmarks has a hell of a lot of these icons right now. I feel like every time I look theres another one there.
Artists can take down their art for a variety of personal reasons, but lately, one of the biggest reasons is you SHITHEADS ON TUMBLR THAT KEEP ON UPLOADING STUFF WITHOUT SOURCING IT.Do you have any idea how rude this is? Do you know how upsetting this is to the artists to see people steal their art and just post it wherever the fuck they feel like just because they ‘thought it was nice’? I don’t give a shit if you think you’re being nice by ~letting people see the nice art~, the original artist was DOING THAT THEMSELVES ON THEIR PIXIV PAGE. Maybe you think ‘oh but if they dont like people stealing it they shouldnt have uploaded it to the internet in the first place’, but NEWSFLASH it doesnt matter what you think, it matters what the actual artist thinks and wishes and if you have a single iota of respect for them then you’ll respect those wishes of theirs for you to not just upload whatever the hell you want to tumblr without adding a source.
If you want to promote some nice art, LINK BACK. If you’re too fucking lazy to look for the source using saucenao or reverse google image search then just delete your damn tumblr and go away because I don’t have time for your shit. Pixiv doesnt have time for your shit. It honestly wouldnt surprise me if Pixiv started up a feature that lets artists block anyone outside Japan from seeing their art if they so choose at this point.
Always remember to credit the original artist and link back to the Pixiv page, as visibly as you can.ZEROCHAN IS NOT A FUCKING SOURCE EITHER.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THIS IS A PSA
PIXIV USERS ARE STARTING TO DELETE THEIR WORK AND HIDE IT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE STEALING IT AND NOT SOURCING IT AND OH MY GOD PLEASE SOURCE YOU SHIT. I HAVE SCROLLED DOWN SOME OF THE PAIRING TAGS WITH NO SOURCE AND IT MAKES ME WANNA DIE BECAUSE PEOPLE WORKED LONG AND HARD ON THAT ART
THAT IS ALL
【 Such a tragedy we have avoided.. 】: Let me just pause ooc for a moment.
I’m sorry but it’s really annoying to see this keep happening on my dash. For those who don’t know,Pixiv is considering shutting down access to western users.
Why?
Because of edits and reposts onto social media sights, such as Tumblr, Facebook, even Twitter. The problem has been here for the past months and I really just get sad seeing everyone reblog edits and reposts of art that’sUNSOURCED.
I’m sorry if I seem bitchy, but this is a critical issue, because not only would this cut off fandom posters, it cuts off any person in the US from accessing Pixiv.
Pixiv artists are already deleting their works and accounts, more and more artists are deleting everything because of this. I have alreadymade a post about this on my main, and so havetwo ofmy friends. You may say we’re throwing a big deal about this, but the thing is- we’re just trying to make sure that us fans and future fans have the art resources.
Things to know:
- ZEROCHAN AND WEHEARTIT ARE NOT SOURCES.
- I REPEAT. ZEROCHAN AND WEHEARTIT ARE NOT SOURCES.
- If you really absolutely don’t know, try the Google Images source thing.
- Or better yet-saucenao is a better one, as if it’s a pixiv work, it shows you the original pixiv link, if it’s deleted or not, and the artist.
- If you don’t know the source, DO THOSE STEPS ABOVE, and if they don’t work, state you don’t know it and ask around.
Oh, and biggest thing for the Vocaloid fandom mainly, along with other fandoms:
this is a list of pixiv artists who do not want their art reposted or edited at all.
If you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO REPOST THEIR WORK, ASK THEM FIRST! It won’t hurt you to be polite, and even if they don’t understand english they probably will understand what you’re saying.
I find this very relevant to this blog so I hope you’ll allow me to give another PSA.
(Thank you endless-chocolate for sending me this link)
I see this happen on my dash sometimes and I’m not gonna lie, I did consider unfollowing the people that reblog unsourced fanarts. Especially more so on those so-called one piece confessions/dirty op confessions whatever. It’s getting ridiculous.
However, it’s my belief that every one of you are wonderful people who respects others, especially those who have worked hard in drawing and writing all the wonderful doujins and fanarts. So I hope I can raise some more awareness to this.
As usual I’m going to illustrate it in an easy way. (read right to left)
What supposed to happen:
What you’re doing when you don’t source:
What you’re making the artist do:
Every artist grow by displaying their work and getting critique. But when their work is spread around without any credit to the artist, AND EVEN MAKES THE OWN ARTIST DELETE IT FROM HIS/HER SITE it lost the purpose and meaning.
What you should do from now on (if you haven’t been doing so):
Here’s a guide on how to use saucenao. If it’s from pixiv, saucenao will most likely find it. If it doesn’t, use google image search.
If an artist spend their time to draw that fanart, I think we can spend a bit of time finding out the proper source/credit.
This has been another PSA from Dark Honey.
please please please please source art!! ;3;

I am kinda tired to see unsourced fanart (especially when sometimes in tags you can see the SAME FANART properly sourced but people keep reblogging the unsourced one) so here a little tutorial about how to share and source properly a fanart. Don’t forget that someone has drawn those fanarts, they put their time and their talent into it, they’re great enough for you to share them, so source them.
First of all, and that’s something that most of people seems to not see, there is a SHARING OPTION on Pixiv.
LET’S ZOOM
Good. As you can see, you can use it to share the work of the artist and so source it properly, and you actually have the consentment of the artist to post it ! IT’S GREAT ISN’T IT !
Good then, but how do you if the artist had the share disabled ? Well like this, look
If the artist doesn’t want to see his art shared, you’ll see that. Then, EVEN if the art is really good and you want to share it DON’T DO IT. Please just don’t do it, for the artist. Same if a fanart has been removed don’t post it. There is a reason if that happened. There is a reason if they don’t want to see their art shared.
Now for people who has some fanart saved from ages ago and want to post it, here an easy solution for your sourcing problem ! It’s the extension IMAGE SERCH OPTION ! You can donwload it for Google Chrome and Firefox. (Sorry I don’t have the link for Firefox, if someone has it just edit the post please)
It’s fucking magic trust me, with just a right click on your image you’ll find the source, that’s wonderful.
So let me explain how it works. Let’s use the one I used on the sharing pic.
First you upload the fanart in your draft and save it in your draft. After that all you have to do is a right click on the picture and
As you can see there is the image search option, just hover it and then click on one of the website you want to use
(I usually use SauceNao search so let’s use this one for this tutorial)
If you click then you’ll see that
Then just click on the Pixiv ID and you’ll be redirected on the fanart page immediatly, and you’ll be able to source your fanart properly.
Not that hard you see ! It only takes 5 little minutes of your life, even less maybe. It’ll make everyone happy (the artist but also people on tumblr because they can see where the fanart come from).
That’s it, that’s all you need to know about how to share and source Pixiv fanarts. Have a nice day and thank you for reading all that, and sorry for my bad english, it’s not my first language.

Actually both of theses Artist stole from this
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=24793958
Oh the irony.
It gets better turns out this is the original
http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=1416892
OTL
Can I just tell you that I can really taste the metal already?
WHAT IS HAPPENING.
Wait what
Art theft x 3??
Is this inception
Well basically this is the original http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=1416892 because it was made in 2008.
Which nayuta-mint stole.
This one http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=24793958 was traced off the original and was made in 2012. Which aomexxxiwakami stole.
So it’s like art thief inception….
This is seriously the most ridiculous case of art theft ever omg
The fuck is happening
the sisterhood of the stolen drawing
I’d like to point out something really quickly to editors on tumblr.
Most of the fanart that you choose to edit comes from pixiv, am I wrong? The copyright laws in America are a little bit different from Japanese copyright laws. In fact, Japanese copyright laws are much stricter in many ways. Specifically, I want to talk about the “moral rights” that copyright law grants copyright holders (including those that create fanart):
(If the image is too small to read, click here.)
I’m talking specifically about the last bullet. The author can control the modification of a work. If you don’t have permission from an author to modify artwork and then post it on tumblr, asking for notes and credit and attention, then you are breaking the copyright law that protects that artwork. It’s as simple as that.
Yes, it still applies to you even if you don’t live in Japan. Yes, you have to get permission from the artist to do it. Yes, you are breaking the law if you do not. Please understand that the majority of artists do not want their copyright violated, nor would they appreciate the hard work that goes into drawing something being invalidated by an edit.
I figured I should make this post since people want to help these poor artists from people editing their artwork. Anyways, I’m going to do this in steps so that it’s easier to read.
- Get a Pixiv account. This is actually very simple, and if you really need help you can always use Google or some other translator to help translate stuff. (Unless you already have Google Chrome, it should translate the page automatically then.) It’s about as easy as getting a DA account, actually.
- Go to a Pixiv artists profile and send them a message. I screencapped exactly what you should do to make it easier.
- Use some kind of translator for the next part. (Unless somewhere on their page says they can speak English or any other language.) Add in somewhere that you yourself don’t speak Japanese at all. (IE: 日本語を話しません。ごめんなさい。(I can’t speak Japanese. I’m sorry.)
- Be as professional and as polite as you can.
- Please, please add in tumblr’s abuse e-mail. This way the artist can contact tumblr and have them deal with it. (Here’s the link to tumblr’s abuse e-mail: abuse@tumblr.com)
There’s what it should look like. Feel free to word it however you want to, just be professional and polite!
That should do it. The original artists input is better when it comes to reporting someone, and you’re honestly helping them in the long run. Most of these artists have no idea what to do when it comes to reporting someone for stolen artwork.Let’s stop these editors once and for all!
I’M SICK AND TIRED OF YOU RAPSCALLIONS NOT TAKING THE TIME TO SOURCE YOUR ART. IF YOU LIKE THE ART SO MUCH, WHY DON’T YOU TAKE THE TIME TO CREDIT THE ARTIST WHO DREW IT? THERE HAVE BEEN PEOPLE CONSTANTLY IMPLORING FOR SOURCED ART, BUT THEIR PLEAS HAVE BEEN IGNORED BY YOUR CARELESSNESS. I HOPE THIS DOESN’T OFFEND ANYONE BECAUSE I’VE BEEN WAITING QUITE A WHILE TO SAY THIS.
SO PLEASE SOURCE YOUR ART. CREDIT THE ARTIST. USE THIS LINK OR THIS LINK IF YOU HAPPENED TO FORGET WHERE YOUR ART CAME FROM.
I know I dont usually reblog stuff on this account anymore but this seemed relevant. c:
This doesn’t source everything. I used about 5 images whose source I know and tried them on all 3 engines and they either took me to the site they came from (aka pixiv) and not the artist’s webpage or came up with no results at all. So it’ll help the source problem but not fix it entirely.
If you don’t know the source, don’t post it online. Simple as that. The problem is that people don’t really care.
So I decided to put this in a separate post because people seem to ask about it a lot and it’d probably be really nice if this could be spread around!
When wanting to use someone else’s artwork online, it really is truly bothersome to have to ask every time you’d want to use someone else’s art. Most artists don’t mind having their art used as long as there is credit, but some artists strictly want permission first.
Please keep in mind that always assuming that it’s not okay is the best mindset.
It’s best to be sure and just message, but if you’re really trying to avoid asking, then it is best to do the following before surely asking:
- Check their pixiv profile or blog profile where it says anything about redistribution. Usually just turning on the Google Translator will suffice, since it’s usually just a really simple sentence.
- Read the art description about redistribution. Turning on Google Translator will suffice as well as it’ll easily pick up.
- Check for these things: ※ These are kind of like Japanese asterisks, where they’re usually used as warnings or cautions and all that.
- If you’ve/someone else received a warning from an artist before saying that you’re not allowed to, please do not redistribute their art any more. Even if it they won’t be able to see it, doing it behind their back is downright rude. If it’s a rumor and you’re not sure, please message.
If the first two are checked, then it’s fairly safe to assume that the artist wouldn’t mind having their art distributed with proper sourcing.
But if you’d like to double check, here’s some phrases you can use when asking for permission.
If you want to repost/distribute art, you could send them something like:
[art link here]
この画像に配布してもいいですか?返答おねがいします!ありがとうございます。(Is it okay to distribute this picture? Please reply! Thank you.)
If you want to use the art to make something else with it, you could send:
[art link here]
この画像でいろいろ作ってもいいですか?返答おねがいします!ありがとうございます。(Is it okay to make something with this picture? Please reply! Thank you.)
If you’d want to add that you cannot speak Japanese, add in:
日本語を話しません。ごめんなさい。(I can’t speak Japanese. I’m sorry.)
If the artist replies to you in Japanese, Google Translate is your best bet since replies will just either say simple “yes” or “no” phrases.
It is best to be able to register into Japanese art sites first since most sites require accounts before messaging, and there are several tutorials online where it tells you directions in English on how to register on a Japanese site.
lulles replied to your post: good job sending a hoard of anon hate to…
I’m against anon hate as well, but people shouldn’t defend her. What she does is wrong and just because she’s not the only one, doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be called out.
stupogo replied to your post: good job sending a hoard of anon hate to…
man whats with all the bad anons today and hey anons why dont u show ur self
feranelia replied to your post: good job sending a hoard of anon hate to…
Exactly. It’s wrong that she gets anon hate, they really should stop that, but let’s not forget she’s hurting the artists as well. Don’t they deserve to be defended, too? Pixiv artists have already voiced their discomfort, and we should respect them.
xcupidxstuntx replied to your post: good job sending a hoard of anon hate to…
If a majority of Tumblr users jumped off a cliff would that make it a smart thing to do? Please. It’s hardly unfair that someone’s been called out on their bullshit and expected to take responsibility for their actions. ilu Bella

Nope, I’m against sending anon hate to anyone as I edited quite clearly in my post about her. I don’t think anyone is right in sending her hate and I sent her a formal apology even though I had nothing to do with it.
Nor do I think singling one person out is correct either. But you’re wrong, the majority of Tumblr doesn’t edit fanart, nor is anyone saying she should stop editing anything forever, it’s just the fanart, which she’s been told many times why it’s wrong and still does it anyway. This could have been avoided if she didn’t steal those fanarts in the right place. But even after being told why it’s wrong she still did it.
I don’t want her to feel bad, I gain nothing with that. I don’t want artists to feel bad either, and right now, they’re the one suffering from art theft and I feel inclined to their side since I’m an artist as well.
Just because ephemeral-song isn’t the only one who edits fanart doesn’t mean everyone who also does it is right either. But it’s good that people are taking her as an example as to what not to do. Everyone who does it is disrespecting Artists’ right in favor of their own and that is why it’s wrong and it should be stopped.
Thank you.
It’s a shame people ignore the artists and just do what they want. Even when they give proper credit back to artists that still doesn’t make them any better than people who don’t, or people who source zerochan/danbooru. I wouldn’t want my artwork being used without being asked first either.
I just wished editors would understand that. It doesn’t hurt to ask first and if the artist clearly says on their profile that they don’t want they artwork being used, people should respect it.
Editing fanart has never been and never will be okay. It’s just another way of stealing artwork disguised as “I credit back therefore it’s not stealing”. Things don’t work that way though.
